Member Opportunities and Resources

CDC Long-Term Care Toolkit

LeadingAge has been collaborating directly with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in developing resources and disseminating information to members on influenza immunization and the best approaches in combatting the flu virus.

This flu season, for the 1st time, the CDC National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO) has developed a toolkit specifically targeted to supporting staff vaccination programs in long-term care.

The toolkit includes resources for increasing influenza vaccination among healthcare personnel in long-term care settings; suggestions for implementing flu vaccine programs at the workplace; and data on flu vaccines and why it’s important that employees receive them.

The CDC’s long-term care toolkit is free-of-charge and is now live at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/toolkit/long-term-care/.

NPR Covers Use of Antipsychotic Drugs in Nursing Homes

Recent press reports have presented a bleak picture of inappropriate use of antipsychotic drugs to control behavior among nursing home residents with dementia. These articles have painted all nursing homes with a broad brush. LeadingAge has tools available, including Insights and Advancing Excellence, to help you tell your own story on this issue. Nursing Home Quality Metrics is a also a useful tool, reminder it is a program that allows you to compare your MDS quality metrics with others in your geographic market, state, and nationally. Once you have created your comparison groups, you can run a new analysis as needed by clicking on the Analysis Manager tab. You can also trend your performance in use of Anti-Psychotics or other quality measures by clicking on QM Time Series.

Insights/Quality Metrics Update

There are many new training dates for the Quality Metrics tool and other QM resources that can be found here. Both introductory and intermediate training are now being offered. Please encourage members to take a look at the Insights tools – hand out the brochures at your meetings. Extra copies of these can be requested from
