Health Care Decisions Act of 2015 Update

November 9, 2015 LeadingAge DC Executive Director

The full Council had a first reading of the bill on November 3, and there was no opposition. Below is a link to the copy of the version of the bill that the committee approved.

  • Good News #1: LeadingAge DC successfully advocated that the MOST be reviewed, upon a transfer, within the current regulated admissions timeframe, 72 hours, and not be subjected to a 24 hour timeline as it was initially written in the bill. It goes further to say “provided that the patient is not incapacitated or the patient authorized representative, is present.”
  • Good News #2: LeadingAge DC successfully advocated that the MOST Advisory Committee specifically include one representative from a skilled nursing facility.
  • LeadingAge DC’s next steps? We will be working to create education around the MOST form in 2016. Stay tuned

If passed, this legislation would establish a MOST Form to capture patients’ wishes for medical intervention. This is similar to the MOLST form currently being utilized in Maryland. Read LeadingAge DC’s recommendations
