What will you learn?

Mental Health

  • Learn how to address the most common mental health issues staff face in housing and independent living settings for older adults.
  • Learn how to use a guide with tips, tricks and techniques targeted for all staff in independent living/housing and community settings.
  • Identify ways of extending the reach of staff through the involvement of community partners

Dementia

  • Build skills with tips, techniques and suggested language to communicate effectively with residents with dementia.
  • Learn about the Habilitation model for working with residents with dementia. The model is designed to promote positive emotion, reduce negative behaviors, and make the best use of the resident's remaining skills and abilities.

Bullying

  • Learn how to identify bullying behavior among older adults
  • State at least two common characteristics of older adult bullies
  • Be able to describe the role of organizations and bystanders in creating an environment that reduces the incidence of bullying among older adults

Speakers

Marsha Frankel

Marsha Frankel, MSW, LICSW, is a clinical social worker and serves as the Clinical Director of Services for Older Adults at Jewish Family & Children’s Service. Marsha has many years of experience in working with older adults in a wide range of settings. She is a frequent presenter and trainer on topics ranging from Mental Illness, Caregiving, and Bullying among older adults.

Caren Silverlieb

Caren Silverlieb, MMHS. Over the last 30 years, Caren has held a number of executive management positions in government funded, non-profit and private community-based long term care programs, affordable housing, and assisted living. She currently serves as Director of Strategic Planning and Partnerships at Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE). Caren is a frequent presenter at national and state conferences, and private companies on working with residents with mental illness or memory impairment and has published two guides and several articles. She serves on the education committee of LeadingAge national, and the board of trustees of LeadingAge Massachusetts.
